The Nature of the Spiritual Direction Relationship

You receive spiritual direction based on a personal desire to explore and examine your spiritual life to discern the direction of your growth that is most beneficial for you. I may suggest certain practices or readings during the meeting, but you are free to decide whether to adopt them according to your personal needs, except for those who specifically commit to the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises.

Spiritual direction meetings primarily focus on sharing personal experiences rather than theoretical discussions. You are free to decide how much personal experience you share, but the experiences you share must be genuine and personal; otherwise, you will not receive the benefits of spiritual guidance.

My role is to listen to your experiences, both past and present, and to affirm or explore your spiritual experiences and aspirations for the future. This includes asking questions about your inner world, such as emotions, beliefs, desires, and needs. Sometimes, I may invite you to listen to your own heart during the sessions or to silently listen to God's communications.

Spiritual direction may involve exploring psychological issues, but the focus will remain on how these issues are currently helping or hindering your spiritual development. From a Christian perspective, this means how they help or hinder you from drawing closer to, or freely responding to God. Spiritual direction will therefore involve discerning choices in life, and while I may offer some insight, guidance or observations, the final decision is your responsibility.

Generally, online spiritual direction is scheduled about once a month. For beginners, it may be helpful to start with sessions every two to three weeks to cultivate and become familiar with the experience of contemplation in daily life. Those undergoing intensive guided retreats or Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in daily life will have their sessions on a different frequency.

Who is a spiritual director?

Whether or not you would like to receive spiritual direction with me, I sincerely wish that you know there is a sacred service called spiritual direction that is respectful, boundaried and supposed to be non-abusive that aims at nurturing the soul of people. Spiritual direction is not witchcraft, magic, confession, religious moral competitions or a saint (though some are canonised after passing) who requested you to monitor his or her life and copy his or her behaviours. You deserved to know what a spiritual director is and discern if someone might be a suitable guide to you.
